Community Engagement Scale

Community Engagement is a continuum. This chart is intended to help arts presenters to understand, assess, and track how their venue works with community.

This continuum moves through three stages:

Awareness: Focus is on the provision of venue for building community awareness, exposure and consumption of culture

Participation: Focus is on the application and provision of venue for community participation in culture

Engagement/Empowerment: Focus is on the application and provision of venue for “community” exploration, application of knowledge, issues, needs, and information

It is possible to work at all three levels of community engagement simultaneously; a community can continue to consume cultural offerings in a space, while also feeling that they have freedom and agency to explore within that space.
